Information for WA sports promoting the DrugFree message

DrugFree is the message promoted by the WA Drugs in Sport Strategy, an initiative of Sport Medicine Australia. The project provides education and policy support to create healthier sporting environments.

Sports Medicine Australia manages DrugFree sponsorships on behalf of Healthway. Sports promoting the DrugFree message includes Baseball WA and Athletica.

The DrugFree message reflects community opposition to drug misuse and encourages the pursuit of healthy active lifestyles. DrugFree incorporates both legal (alcohol and tobacco) and illegal drugs (cannabis).  Through DrugFree sponsorships, parents, coaches and other adults are urged to act as positive role models for young people.

In order to promote the DrugFree message and behaviour as much as possible, recipients of DrugFree sponsorships are expected to implement the following strategies as a minimum:

• Place the DrugFree message in newspaper advertisements, programs, invitations, flyers, tickets, posters and signage
• In media releases, interviews or written and oral statements indicate that their activity/venue/event is DrugFree and is sponsored by Healthway
• Use the DrugFree resources provided by SMA (e.g. leaflets, posters, t-shirts, stickers, hats, educational material)
• Develop DrugFree policies for their club or association
• Introduce and enforce smoke free areas in their venue/s
